Lion & Pheasant Hotel & The Boathouse Inn Wi-Fi

With increased competition and internet provision within Shrewsbury town centre we were able to increase the line capacity whilst reducing cost. This provided Gigabit internet access for staff and guests.

As part of the planning, it was recognised that the current Wi-Fi access points could not cope with the higher throughput so Flex IT developed a Wi-Fi solution using Ubiquiti UniFi long-range access points with PoE switches, all connected back to the new high-speed internet connection.

Using a single Ubiquiti UniFi long-range access point and detailed plans of the hotel and the pub, Flex IT created a plan for the most efficient deployment of access points across the buildings by testing it in different areas and measuring the effective range at each point. This ensured that the correct number of access points were purchased to provide full coverage in each building.

Configuration of the access points was completed using the Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Connector, which allows for remote management of the Wi-Fi access point cluster. This allows for changes to be made quickly and easily if required.

Separate networks were created for staff (Private) and guests (Public) which is crucial to enhance security and prioritize resources by separating internal systems from public devices. With the separate management of each network, we can make use of features such as throttling bandwidth on either the public or private network as required.

When guests connect to the Wi-Fi, they are presented with a landing page which allows them to accept the terms and conditions of using the Wi-Fi, which was specifically requested by the client. Staff and guests are then provided free, strong, secure internet connectivity wherever they are in the hotel or the pub.
